My adult son, Dan42, has the Sony Reader and loves it. From the little he let me play with it, I liked it too. We've both read reviews of Kindle and done other research about it and think it stinks. The only advantage we see to the Kindle is that one can download books via the 'phone' without a computer. But the Sony is more versatile and user-friendly.
