Great thread, thanks so much all you wonderful contributors!

I don't have a record of the ones I actually gave up on, but I can
offer a list of a few I wish I had (details on my bookshelf if you
care):

K-Pax by Gene Brewer. The movie intrigued me. And I'm accustomed to
books generally being better than their movie adaptations. In this
pcase, I was wrong. Vague wanna-bee cult philosophy.

Face of the Water by Robert Silverberg. I know lots of people like
him, but I just can't get on his wavelength. This one I managed to
complete, hoping for something creatively meaningful, but again,
cliched alternative spirituality.

The Fabulous Riverboat by Philip Jose Farmer. I liked the premise,
and exploration thereof, of To Your Scattered Bodies Go, but I gave
up on the series after this second one. Not sure exactly why, but...
as another poster implied...

There's plenty of fish in the sea, and Mt. TBR will not erode in my
lifetime if I waste effort struggling through the stuff that doesn't
do it for me. :)
