Hello,

If you have issues reading the list emails, or ensuring successful
posts read on. If you have no issues, go to the next email.

We have had various issues of late comprising the following

1. member's posts rejected "Message rejected by filter rule match"
(a dead-ringer for emails with no plain-text content
2. members posts don't (disappears into black hole)
3. members unable to read posts without hunting through a tree of
attachments for one that works

We have 3 mailing lists which have been instituted at different times
and with different settings as they resided on different hosts set up
by different people and subject to occasional adjustments by yours
truly.

There are two ways that we try and accept all messages and render them
readable by all the diverse email clients used out there. Firstly we can
try and delete unwanted stuff and than massage the balance into plain
text format Secondly, we can enforce a plain-text-only format where any
email with anything other than plain text is rejected, obviously this
would be more painful.

I have just looked at the three lists and ensured that the settings are
identical and that the first method is implemented with the default
settings. ie back to basics which I hope will improve matters.

We need you to please ensure that your email client is set to plain
text. As part of its plain to ensure total hegemony over the internet
Microsoft email clients (Outlook, Express) are set with html as a
default setting. Please check that this has been changed. There are two
options.

1. The properties of any given email address in the address book can
be set to disable anything other than plain-text. Thus html, multipart,
and all like features can be disabled. This probably is effective where
you start a new message to this list getting the address out of the
address book. When answering a list post I am not so sure what it does,
it should be smart enough to pick that up, but who knows?

2. Somewhere you can set that no emails whatsoever leave your copy of
Outlook or Express in any format other than plain text. If you don't
send fancy email, why not make life easy and just disable the whole
bundle of M$ frippery for good?

If you send out emails from your system to the list with background
images, pictures, various logos, expect that such posts to the list are
likely to be mangled and in any case are often illegible to other
recipients

I will monitor carefully what I see, what the list does, what
complaints I receive and will act accordingly.

Posting to wrong addresses is a common cause of unhappiness
email to these addresses
[email protected] (the 'Sender', not the 'From' address)
[email protected] (me)
[email protected] (part of the magic)
will not reach the list and the first two are likely to end up on my
desk. If you see them, stay away.

CHECK THE 'TO' address when you make a reply to a post.
DON'T click on old email headers to start a new unrelated post.
The address of the list is given at the bottom of the post.
[email protected]
and is a good place to click to start a new email

If you have trouble and I ask for a copy of the rejection notice then
please forward this _as_ _an_ _attachment_ . Somewhere even M$ will
include an option for you to start a new email with an old one
'attached' in rather the same way as you attach a picture. The default
'Forward' where the original is quoted within the new one is definitely
not what I want because it does not include the original headers.

If you want to know what 'headers' are, most email clients will show you
with Ctl-H , or else check the help file.

Some email clients have special menu items for mailing lists. Check
these out.

Hope this helps.

Ian
