I'm curious what type or model player you are using. Several years ago,
the Radio's alarm was VERY unreliable. At some point, changes were made
to address this, and as a result, it will sometimes "over-react" to
apparent lack of a valid stream, and instead play its internal "backup"
alarm sound.
Based on your description of "beeps" instead, that's probably a Boom - I
don't think it's alarm "fall-back" logic is as aggressive as the
Radio's, but it's likely not getting a valid stream fast enough before
it reverts to the backup alarm sound - changing the URL may have
resulted in a "more responsive" radio stream.
