Spurred on by the replies and comments in this thread, today I installed a new WiFi card in the Boom. Please to report all working great now on WiFi. The old WiFi card was firmly seated in the socket, in fact it seemed to have some sticky foam holding it to the motherboard (apart from the mini PCI clips) and took a lot of gentle prying to release it.
