Well, that's self contradictory!
"using a gcc version newer than 2.95.x (including the various
RedHat compilers from 7.0 on) results in a 50% performance drop
for Athlons, and 25% drop for Pentium III"
...
"As of this writing, there is one gcc version which works best on
all platforms we know of other than UltraSparcs: gcc 3.1."
Also, I'm strongly suspicious that they only tested with vc6 and not
with vc7.1.
