Well, I don't hate acroread, but YMMV.

I've recently discovered mobipocket where you can download books and
periodicals [international herald tribune] onto your palm for reading
for free. It just seems too good to be true. I had to fake some
demographic data to download thier software, and I need to boot windows
to run it, but for free access to the international herald tribune, it's
hard to beat.

There are some books to pay for [mostly the erotica, quelle surprise],
but there's a lot of classics there for nothing [buddha's 8-fold path,
maughan, dickens, poe, $c.]. I am not affiliated with them in any way.
