Unfortunately, this is an existing .Com-pany (yes, there's still one out
there believe it or not) so the choice of using frames is really not mine to
make. I just have to work with what I have. I think the SHTML idea has the
most potential here.

...and yes $param = param('referer'); is trivial ;)
