One fast, stable filter is  "pdftotext," which is provided by xpdf. It seems 
to keep some really basic formatting.

I don't know how much formatting information you'll be able to save- PDF is a 
strange file format. Multiple columns especially are almost impossible to 
preserve (as far as I know).
