[please make all replies off list.] folks,
I successfully installed Linux on my machine last night. I wanted to thank everyone who helped in the process, answering my questions, etc. The experience was a -million- times better than two years ago when I tried installing linux. last time, it turned out I had a hardware compatibility problem that manifested itself in indirect ways. Anyway, I installed RedHat7.1, partially because of recommendations, partially because of it's merits, and partially because that was what was on the shelf in teh store. ;) The whole process took three or four hours, but that included installing a second hard drive (and finding my static wrist-strap), starting the Linux install in 'Custom', reading up on the proper sizes of various partitions, formattin the harddrive, installing -all- the packages, and running the red-hat agent to install all the patches. When I brought linux up, I got the impression I was running a serious operating system (unlike my impression 2 years ago). The Update-agent was very impressive, (is that new?), and makes installing security/bug fixes just a point and click away. And the whole thing just felt more "solid". (stable). when all was said and done, the first thing I did as a linux user was make a perl/ directory in my home account, and run a "hello world" perl script. It worked. And there was great rejoicing! Hurray! After seeing that succeed, I brought up netscape, surfed over to CPAN, downloaded one of my modules, and installed it. Now, I can get back to perl development again. Thanks again everyone. Greg London
