Hi, this is part two of the "PDA with Linux Desktop" thread. if this is not relevant to you, my apologies, and please disregard this message.
I had requested info on PDA's syncing with a desktop running Linux, and I recieved a flurry of replies. I also recieved messages from a number of people who asked me to let them know what I came up with. There were enough that I figured the list wouldn't get too upset if I sent it out this way. First, I decided to go with a PalmOS based PDA. It's used by a couple of different PDA brands, and it's somewhat of a standard. The Linux tools that talk to PDA's talk to PalmOS PDA's. (and I just COULDN'T go with WindowsCE) ;) the two main contenders using PalmOS are Palm PDA's and Handspring PDA's. I decided on Handspring. Palm has used different expansion ports from model to model, which makes add-on modules less universal. Handspring has used the same expansion connector for every model they've ever made, which has allowed them to accumlate a number of plug-in-able modules. The plug ins I want are a GPS module, a camera, and possibly a CellPhone. Handspring has all of these modules. I had 3 Handspring Visor PDA's to choose from (Edge, Pro, and Prism) and I selected the Prism because it's color and both GPS and Camera are color enabled. Note, if you have different applications you want to run, different PDA's may be better for your situation. The prism looks like the best for the kind of things I want to do. The store was sold out of Prism's last night. I'll see if I can buy one this weekend. I'll send one last update to let everyone know just how easy/difficult it was for a newbie to get a linux desktop to sync with the PDA. EOM. Greg
