If perl was being built today, it wouldn't surprise me if rename was
not in the core. It was in the core of perl1 though, and perl went
through nearly seven years without a decent extention mechanism, which
would have provided a better place for it. (I'm calculating that as
the difference between the release of perl1 through the release of
perl 5.000, according to the perlhist man page.)
