Here is one for real PERL mongers!
I never had to face the obsolescence of PERL on one of my systems, as I am
usually pretty good at keeping them somewhat up to date. However, as some of
you already knows, I also have a pet project, which is maintaining my
website on a 16megahertz 68k mac SE/30. On this machine I run upgrades only
on a necessity basis and it seems like I got to that point: I need to build
PERL 5.6 for it to replace the perl 5.004 that came with NetBSD 1.4.2.
Now for the question.... What is the officially sanctioned way to
upgrade PERL ? I heard peaople complaining of "problems", but since I never
updated PERL directly, I am not sure where the pitfalls are - and I have one
complication: the machine in question does not have a c compiler (eh!). I
build code for it on another 68k machine (a IIcl, almost the same thing) and
then move things over. I am following the instructions in the INSTALL file,
but can I build things on the IIcl machine, make a giant tarball with the
build environment, and then run make install on the se/30 ?
And If any of you happens to have a smarter way around this, please let
me know!
