Karen: Tom Mayer is really looking at developing a Complementary Currency program in Boulder County and has targeted Human Services as an arena to develop it. I went to a meeting last month with some consultants that Tom met and found it very interesting. There are numerous examples of complementary currencies that have helped develop an economy (in Brazil) and are used throughout the world. Switzerland has had a system in place for decades and is used by local businesses. I think there is potential for this in Boulder County but as you know, the devil is in the details. In the metro area, Share Colorado uses a kind of complementary currency with their program of getting people to volunteer for a non-profit, shovel snow for an elderly neighbor, or some other community service activity on a volunteer basis for a reduced grocery box. I haven't looked at Santa Fe's as yet but will. I think this discussion is going to be ongoing because there is some passion about how to extend additional human services without tax revenue support. I am not sure if Tom will be at the commissioner's meeting with non-profits on Thursday but that is something to look at. I agree that non-profits in Boulder County collaborate more than they compete with each other but there is huge competition for the donated dollar. With so many 501c3s in this county, donations don't go far in supporting human services.
