The people of New Orleans, along with their homegrown musicians, have had a tough go of things in the past eighteen months. First came Hurricane Katrina in late August 2005, followed by Hurricane Rita less than thirty days later. As we are all painfully aware the tragedy of the devastation in New Orleans was only exceeded by our government's criminally incompetent response, serving to exacerbate this catastrophe. Many of New Orleans' finest musicians, like most residents, suffered total loss of home and belongings. This often included treasured and occupation-critical musical instruments. One of these musicians is Frederick "Shep" Shepherd, a true old school heart of New Orleans music. Shep was born in New Orleans in 1945 and started playing music while in junior high school in the 1950s. He bought his first saxophone, coin by coin, from Werlein's Music Store on Canal Street. "It was old and raggedy," he says, "but I didn't know it. It looked so good to me." Shep has performed as a band member for many R&B and jazz legends including Ray Charles and Otis Redding, and has played with Fats Domino since 1970. With the arrival of Katrina, Shep lost everything, except his tenor saxophone and his music. Following Katrina, Shep was performing in Europe, one of the few places American jazz musicians can actually earn money playing jazz, where he suffered an accident and received assistance from the U.S. State Department to get back to the U.S. for medical treatment. He also received a bill for compensation from the State Department in excess of $10,000 for the flight home. The U.S. State Department then confiscated his passport until payment is made, preventing him from traveling to the one place (Europe) he can go to earn a living in order to pay the bill. So, now dislocated from New Orleans and living in Phoenix, Arizona, Shep can use some help. This month he will be doing his first studio recording since Katrina in Boulder, CO at Immersive Studios. A group of other New Orleans musicians have organized a live concert benefit immediately following Shep's week-long recording session, to help him pay some bills, get his passport back and get back to work. Come Out And Support New Orleans' Hottest Sax Man Live On The Immersive No.7 Stage! The New Orleans Christmas Gumbo & Benefit Concert for Frederick "Shep" Sheppard is Thursday, December 21, 2006. There are two shows, 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. with "real deal gumbo" being served at 6:30 and 8:30 respectively. Shep and the band include New Orleans musicians James Singleton/bass, Chris Lacinak/drums and John Magnie/organ. Tickets are available at Immersive Studios and at various locations around town including Robb's Music. Tickets w/gumbo are $10 or $25 that includes the new CD being recorded here at Immersive by Shep and the band. Seating is limited to 100 per show.
