Despite all the research and subsequent pasionate debate two things remain clear in the outcome data from Y10 and 12 in NSW. 1. Girls are outperforming boys 2. Girls to boys achievement gap in literacy based subjects is still there.
Interestingly the level of literacy to access Maths and Science is higher than for English / Humanities subjects. Yet boys are holding their own in these subjects. How is that to be explained? Is the overconfidence issue more apparent in single sex schools? There is a growing trend for schools to sparate the boys and girls for English and PDHPE in coed schools. Its early days on this area but the anecdotal info from Newcastle points to separation as a viable option. Many teachers will tell you the girls dominate in a mixed class in English / Humanities. It would be interesting to know what messages teachers are prepared to admit they give their kids about gender and predeliction for success in subjects.
