Blokes' yarns sought by reading group
Reckon you've got a good yarn for a few keen Nelson blokes? A ripper
you've shared with your mates down the pub? Or something your dad once told
you?
Nelson non-profit literacy promoters Adult Learning Support are looking
for short stories for men who are reluctant readers for its Books for Blokes
competition.
Coordinator Marian Richards is not looking for Nelson's answer to War
and Peace.
"We just want stories that men will enjoy that are somewhere between
300 and 1500 words long and are not too complex in structure or language," she
said.
Stories can be fiction or non-fiction but must be original.
Entries will be considered by a panel of judges with the best included
in an anthology that will be used by adult literacy groups throughout New
Zealand.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three stories. The author of the
winning story will receive $300 and have their entry published in the Nelson
Mail.
"We hope that existing and would-be writers in the Nelson region will
get behind this competition and help us come up with an anthology that makes
avid readers out of our male learners," Ms Richards said.
The competition closes on October 26 and winners will be announced at
the end of November. For an entry form contact Adult Learning Support by phone
on 03 539 4114 or email [EMAIL PROTECTED]
