Hello Cindy: I always have my MPower or formally my BrailleNote turned on when inserting the network card. It lets me get audio confirmation that the card was correctly inserted and has ben correctly recognized. I often use a cradle in my PCMCIA slot to insert the network card and unfortunately, that can be inserted upside down.
Good luck on getting your schools I.T. Infrastructure to change its access security policy.
