Pam when I got mine, I plugged it in and turned it on immediately.  From
what I have read since I might not have wanted to do that, but since it was
running off electricity, I for one did not have any problems.  I read the
getting started Braille book you'll receive with yours and then set to on
the online user's guide.  I've had no problems with the battery so I haven't
even explored calibration.
