Mary Ellen, Provided you know the user name and password you use for logging in, this should get you back to an automatic login. These instructions work for xp home.
If you go to the run dialog, type in: Control userpasswords2 It will birng up a dialog that has a checkbox which says "users must enter a password at logon" uncheck this box, enter on okay, then the next screen will ask for the user name and password of the account you want to have logong automatically.
