Val, I can answer one of your questions. The message about "unable to initialize Braille driver" comes up because of a check box that is checked under Braille options in JAWS. If you uncheck that, you won't get that annoying message.
As for the rest of it, I assume you have followed all the usual steps: you've gone into JAWS Braille options and added the BrailleNote as a display; you arrow to it in the list and then press the Space bar to check it. Tab to OK, press Enter. Then unload JAWS, hook up the BrailleNote, set it in Terminal mode (from the Main Menu, press T.) Now start JAWS and you should have Braille. As for the synthesizer piece of this, you say you have installed the driver that allows the BrailleNote to be used as a synthesizer under JAWS. Somebody else may have to step in here, as it sounds to me like you've done what needs doing.
