Dear Al,
I have noticed when importing a .brf file created on my BN into Duxbury, I
must import it as a Duxbury coded braille file instead of a braille
formatted file. If I import it as a braille formatted file, much of the
data is missing.
Now, if I import the file as a Duxbury coded braille file, all of the data
is there but there are no indications for carriage returns or line feeds but
only paragraph codes and every hard return which isn't followed by 2 spaces
will convert to a single space with no hard return.
When I talked to Duxbury about this, the man explained notetakers, like the
BrailleNote, have a continuous flow of writing and the importing program
must try to interpret this braille.
As I understand it, the Keysoft codes for line endings, page endings,
indents and other formatting are not preserved. This is true even when I
set the ASCII translation options to have carriage returns and line feeds
turned on.
Now, I have imported .brf documents from the BN into Duxbury many times and
the files which will import smoothly are the ones I am brailling a line of
words and a line of music. This is because I am manually putting in the new
line returns and I'm manually putting in the spaces.
Your friend could turn off word wrap and write the lessons putting in all of
the hard returns and spaces manually. But there is still no way to add hard
page breaks because they just won't be preserved. They are converted as
skipped lines not hard page breaks.
HumanWare needs to create codes for Keysoft which can be preserved and seen
when a .brf file created on the BN is seen by a person who is using a PC and
Duxbury.
The NLS folks are very strict and they expect everything to be perfect! I
went through part of the course myself and I got so fed up with it I quit.
If your friend has a PC, I would suggest that she buy a copy of DBT for
Windows and braille her lessons using that program. It will save time and
frustration. Your friend is better off than I was--I had to send in
everything by mail on paper using a Perkins.
I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Subject: BN formatting
I am posting this for a friend who is taking the NLS Braille certification
course using the Braille Note BT 5.1. Her material is being rejected
because of formatting problems. Following is her brief note to the
instructor, a reply from the instructor, and a reply to the reply. If
anyone can assist with the problem, please let me know, and I'll forward
replies to my friend or, if you prefer, I'll send you her e-mail address.

A propos the BN, I created the Braille lesson for NLS as a BRF; I read
the
file in layout mode so the carriage returns and page breaks definitely
show
up; I have the margins set through the format
menu, 40-space line and 25-line page.
Thanks in advance for looking at this!

I wish I could help you with the technical end of things. While you're
talking with PulseData, let them know that your line breaks are appearing
simply as carriage returns (ascii 13), where many programs expect to see
carriage return+line feed (ascii 13 ascii 10) at the end of each line. I
do an extra step of running your files through a scrub table (a Duxbury
utility) to get those linefeeds inserted, but that's an extra step. Also,
your file does not have page breaks in them, so I'm surprised it is
printing OK for you.
I hope these notes are helpful.

Subject: another try, lesson 2.brf
I hope this does it - I have no idea why the carriage return was
obliterated on Line 3 (or 1 of the lesson). I actually called Pulse
Data about
it because it happened again upon closing the document.
