Girl, you take an awful lot of unnecessary steps! If you use the "save as"
feature, you could copy directly to a compact flash card. At the filename
prompt, you would type e:\books\filename.brf. Then do whatever you want
with the flash card. You can copy the file from the flash card to the PC.
And I never use the mydocuments folder--I create my own folders on the C
drive.

First of all, in the web brail questions and answers thing you received
when you subscribed to it, there is an extremely detailed section on how
to set your computer up to recognize web braille.
Ok set this up and it will tell you exactly what to do in most operating
systems to do this.
Now once I get up onto web braille itself, I have set my computer to
remember my password and so I simply hit enter.
Now I do a simple search and when I get to the volume I want I click on it
and it will ask if I want to open or save. Ok I click the save, tab to
name and I write the name with a brf extension.
Now I let it download and then I exit out of the web braille altogether.
This is on my pc.
Now I go into windows explorer with a windows key plus e or in the case of
my ibm laptop I will go into my computer, call up the hard drive go to
documents and settings mary ellen then my documents. I locate the volume
which I have just downloaded, copy it to a flash card and then putthe card
into the braille note.
I then go to the file manager where I type m for move I locate the drive
and folder where I have put card document and move the document into my
books.
Or, if I am simply working with the pk and know I will be traveling when I
copy the volume from the computer, I simply copy it into the books folder
I have set up on a flash card and we're done.
Then if I want it on the mpower, I simply move it by going into the file
manager, type m, locate the books folder and follow the prompts.
A long and involved way to be sure but after experimentation and a lot of
trial and error this is what works best for me.
I have never downloaded directly from the Braille Note as my classic bn
would have a coronary if I had tried it so perhaps when the Arizona
Library gets me straightened out from my transfer from Ohio, I'll get
brave and use the dirrect approach.
In the beginning, I tried doing it via active sync and the book would show
up on the drive in the computer but I could never find it on the bn.
Ok somewhat of a long-winded message but this is what works for me.

The PC shouldn't tack on a .txt. At the filename prompt, you can press
enter or you can type a drive and foldername and filen.brf.
You can use the file and folder options in the control panel setup menu
and Windows will recognize the .brf extension as an application file
extension. If you have DBT Win (Duxbury for Windows) on your PC, you can
tell Windows to always open a .brf file using Duxbury. You can save
your books directly to a CompactFlash card.

Hi Estin,
Here's how to work web-braille. Go to
www.loc.gov/nls
Click on Browse the Catalog.
Enter your search terms, such as title, author, etc. To find things
faster,
select "braille" in the "type" combo box, or whatever it's called.
When you find what you want, you'll see link beginning in http for
each
volume. Hit context menu on this link, then arrow down to save as.
You'll be
asked to enter your NLS username and apssword, so do that. Then save-as
as
you normally would. If your ocmputer tacks on a .txt after the .brf
extention, go to the file using Windows Explorer and hit F2, and erase
the
.txt part, and jsut that, not the .brf. Hope this makes sense. If you
ahve

While in the magazine or book on line, I do an S with spacebar. I
get the save file propts as to where it should go etc. When asked
for a file name, I give it the NLS book number or perhaps the
magazine name followed by a number representing the various parts of
the magazine with a dot brf extension. Always give a web braille
book a dot brf extension. When pressing enter, I have my dot brf
file instantaneously and it is ready to read off line. My braille
grade is set to 2 by default.

Tonight I tried to save a magazine to my mPower which I received via
web braille through NLS. However, when I pressed s chord, and gave
it a name and saved it, when I opened it, the BRF file had been
turned into text, and was all messed up. So I tried again, but I
tried to use back space with x after the s chord, and saving the
file as an HTML was my only option.
So, what I did was just mark the beginning and end of the issue,
using the block commands menu, and pasted those into keyword. I
must comment here on how wonderfully the mPower handled this
process... it copied about 100 pages instantaneously... unlike the
classic!
But, my question is how do those of you who use web braille handle
this issue if you do not wish, or are not able, to stay connected to
the net while reading?
