Hi Richard,
The reason that I questioned JFW compatibility is that a friend tried
Linksys with her laptop running Windows 2000 and using JFW and it would
not read the connectivity menus for her to link to the wireless
network. Now, though, I realize that I would be doing this with my BN and
not my computer. Still, during the setup, I would have to interact with
the software from my computer to get it started or so I believe. This
might be a great reason to pay someone to do that part for me.

Hi Joleen,
As for the speeds, you probably want one that will handle both b and g in
case the BrailleNotes get to use g in the future. When the router is set
up, you can have it use both, that way it will work best for all situations.
I recently purchased the Linksys WRT54G router for just under $70.00. You
shouldn't have to worry about JFW or Charter since the controls for the
router are just a web interface.
You may indeed want someone to help set it up. You will want to use WEP
security. You will want to put in a password phrase that then creates the
WEP code number. You will need to enter that 26 digit code exactly into
the BN configuration.
The helps on the router are very good.
Then, as soon as you find that you can successfully get to the web
wirelessly with your BN, you want to go back into the router controls and
turn off the broadcast of the SSID. That way, no one can see that you
have a router and possibly hack their way into your system.
The main thing is to be patient and plan to have to go through the steps a
few times to get it right.
But, once you get the hang of it, it is well worth it.
I hope that helps some.

Hi All,
My previous concerns with restoring files has been resolved thanks to
this list.
Now I have more questions about wireless connectivity. Although I have
had a NB for 2.5 years, I have never used it on line for e-mail or
surfing the web. When I recently purchased a transplant to mPower, I
purchased a Wi-Fi card from my BN distributor in order to insure that it
would be compatible. Today when I began a search for a wireless router,
I learned that there are more questions for me than answers. There is a
great price range and various speeds available. There are different
brands as well. This is no news on this list, but it gives me reason to
pause and learn more. Here is the information that my husband read from
the Wi-Fi card I have:
One side reads:
Connect Plus Low Power Wi-Fi Card
128 mb memory Compactflash
802.11b
The other side reads:
Sandisk Wi-Fi Card
mac address 006083 v6cd1d4
He said that there are more numbers but the print is very small.
I have learned that wireless routers have different speeds including B,
G, N, and A. It would seem that I don't need a faster speed than my card
can handle. Is this a valid assumption?
Is the B on my card meaning the slowest speed? How fast are the various
speeds?
I have cable Internet and I also wonder:
What is compatible with Charter, my Internet provider?
Do I need to be concerned with compatibility with JFW as well?
You see by these questions that I am a real novice here. I am thinking
that I will want someone to install it and get the fire wall secure and
help me get connected initially. It seems overwhelming to me right now,
but maybe I would do all right taking things step by step.
Please point me in a direction where I may go to find answers and to
learn more about this topic.
Thank you in advance for any help.
