Hi Robert S.; I went to the MD state convention on 11/10. I have a few questions for you about the KNFB reader. First of all, does the document have to be right side up for the machine to be able to take the picture and be able to read it? Some devices, I think, can pick up the material either way. How can a totally blind person tell if the item is correct except through trial and error.
The other item is, when I first saw the machine, I suggested or asked if a stand could be made since I have epelepsi and my hands are some what shaky. At state they showed the stand, but did not give a price and nor did they let us know if it was folding. I am pondering over the KNFB reader, the scanner for the BN and now at state they are trying to talk me into the Sarah. With the Sarah, they could not, off the bat, tell me how I could connect it to my M-power. At least the other 2, I know, will work with my M-power. My problem is how to diside what is best with all my medical problems. Please write with any advice. It has a pda, and a digital camera attached to it. When you have a document that you want to read, such as a typed letter, or your bills you can take a picture of it and then it will read it back to you. The pda has optical character recognition software in it, which basically is like having a scanner, but this is handheld and very lightweight. When you take a picture, the pda processes it and then it will start reading, when you have finished reading, you can take another picture or save the one you have just finished reading. If you save it, it will save it as a xmt file on the cf card in the unit. When you have some documents saved on the reader you want to have in your braillenote, you can take the card out and insert it into the braillenote, then you would go to the folder on the cf card called documents, and open the file as you would any other file on a braillenote. you could then read it in braille, save it to a hard drive if you have one, or edit the file and so forth. You must have the current KNFB reader software which is version 3.0.5 in order to do this. Lastly, you mentioned, that you were wondering if this was a device that was for hearing or not, it only reads the text out loud through voice, if you added a braille display, it would drive the cost up so the KNFB foundation has not considered that at this time.
