I admit that I did make the error of omitting the fact that the new Duxbury file must be Braille. I also forgot that there is some extraneous jibber from the BN formatting and that sometimes line breaks are removed somewhere in the process, but you can still get most of the file, so it works in a pinch.

Hi, Nicole,

Your idea won't work. The KeyWord file must be converted to a .brf file and even then DBT must be "tricked" into accepting the file.

Besides, your idea of opening the file using notepad an copying the text and pasting it into a new DBT file is risky. Since the file is still a braille one, you must be sure that the document you create using DBT is a braille one and not a print one. The full version of Duxbury is different from the version implemented in the BN. If you try to paste a braille file into a Duxbury print file, the Duxbury in your PC will think the text is print, not braille, and you won't be able to translate the file. The full version doesn't translate text pasted from the clipboard on-the-fly.

I'm coming to the conclusion that all of us should set a time to periodically convert documents into formats readable by the PC and have them available so when the BN must go in for repair, the files can still be read using the PC.

I have also suggested HumanWare should create a version of Keysoft for the PC so documents could be read on the PC without conversion. There used to be a version of Keysoft for DOS, so why not create one for Windows?

The only way to access Keyword Braille files on the computer is with Duxbury or another Braille Translator. If using Duxbury, open your Braille file in a program like Notepad, copy and paste the text into a blank Braille file in Duxbury, and translate.

You can open a Keyword text document on a computer (with a program like Notepad). Some extra information will show up, but erase that and it should be fine. Just remember to save it as a txt file. If it is Braille, I am not sure what will happen. You can send it privately to a list member (I would be happy to help) and have them translate it, but if you are not comfortable with that then Notepad seems to be the way to go.

Have a great day,
Alex

Subject: [Braillenote] converting a file

Hi Everyone

I need some immediate assistance. At the moment I haven't a
braille note, and I need to convert a keyword document in to a normal word or text document. Can I possibly do this with something like a file conversion program, without having to rely on a braille note to do this for me.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards
peter
