CORRECTION FOR OUR PREVIOUS PRESS RELEASE - HUMANWARE LAUNCHES
VICTOR READER STREAM, A POWERFUL, PALM-SIZE DAISY/MP3/NISO PLAYER
FOR PLAYING BOOKS AND MUSIC TRANSFERRED FROM PC
Longueuil (Quebec, Canada), July 3, 2007
HumanWare would like to provide a correction and more information
regarding our latest press release announcing the launch of our new
Victor Reader Stream issued on July 29, 2007.
In this press release, we stated that the Victor Reader Stream users
will be able to read digital talking books from the National Library
Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) on cartridges
and through the online service.
First we need to emphasize that HumanWare has currently no link or
association with the NLS digital audio book service. HumanWare has
no control over the future availability of NLS books and the
compatibility between the Victor Reader Stream and the NLS digital
audio book service. NLS will provide more information on the
deployment of their future services in due course. Although the
Stream player supports other digital talking book formats, such as
Daisy 2.02 and BookShare, this means that, in the short term, NLS
books may not be available for Stream users to read.
As well, only residents of the United States or American citizens
living abroad who are unable to read or use standard print materials
as a result of a temporary or permanent visual, physical limitation
may receive NLS audio book services. In cases of blindness, visual
impairment, physical limitations, or learning disability,
eligibility in most cases can be certified by doctors of medicine or
doctors of osteopathy. In some cases, other specialists are
acceptable as a certifying authority, as defined by the Library of
Congress. This means that only certified individuals can access the
NLS audio book services.
Finally, please note that NLS has selected NISO Z39.86-2002 as the
main standard for the distribution of its digital talking
books. This standard defines the format and content of the
electronic file set that comprises a digital talking book (DTB) and
establishes a limited set of requirements for DTB playback devices.
HumanWare regrets any confusion that may have been generated by the
original press release and wishes to clearly declare that
HumanWare's Victor Reader Stream was designed independently of the
Library of Congress NLS audio book service organization and does not
grant any special access to NLS digital audio books.
