Hi, just to let you know that Duxbery is also bringing out UEB so
this might have something to do with the decision behind
Braillenote bring it in.

I admit that, even in literary braille some of the UEB
multi-character
punctuation signs take some getting used to, but they do become
familiar after awhile. I've only experienced UEB literary
braille
code. Change is almost always uncomfortable. I am not
interested in
becoming a defender of UEB. Its inclusion in KeySoft 7.5 simply
means
an extra translation table in the upgraded Duxbury translator.
It
will be available for those who want it, and can be ignored by
those
who want to do that, in the same way that I do not use many of
the
translation tables the BrailleNote provides. I don't understand
the
level of anxiety sometimes expressed on this list about UEB's
being
included in KeySoft 7.5. And let's leave it there, OK?

Hi, Graham,
I looked at the list of ueb symbols on the ICEB web page.
Included on
this
list were the symbols for math and computer braille. The list
didn't
include any contractions or short-form words or any of the grade
2
code.
The ICEB web page admitted the rules for grade 2 haven't been
finalized.
I found this list of symbols to be mind-boggling. UEB has so
many
two-cell
symbols and three-cell symbols! Look at the list and see for
yourself.

Well, Terry, there is obviously more than one view on UEB. I've
been
reading the literary version of UEB regularly for the past year,
and
it's not hard to read at all. I've been reading braille for 60
years.
At least in literary braille, tests at the National Braille
Press
suggest UEB might add 2 pages more for every 100 pages of
braille.
That, in my view, is not the exorbitant increase in space your
note
suggests. I am not familiar with the UEB mathematics code, and
so
do
not comment on it, but the UEB code for literary or textbook
braille
is not the monster you suggest. Just how much experience with
UEB
have you had?

I meant to send this message to the list as well as to Sharon
because
I
believe everyone should understand what this new code would mean
to
us
if it
should be adopted.

Dear Sharon and All,
I have looked at articles and features about this code and it's
my
understanding the code isn't at all like the Grade 2 English
braille
currently used and it isn't like the Nemeth Code for math nor is
it
like
the computer braille code. The UEB is a totally different
animal
and if
it's adopted, (heaven forbid), all of us will have to learn
braille
all
over again. It will be much more difficult to learn and
cumbersome
to
use. The code will take up more space and it's the weirdest
thing
I've
ever seen. Not only that, the rules haven't been finalized and
there
are
several committees working on them.
I know that the currently used math braille is different in the
US
and UK,
but I don't think the literary braille or the music braille is
so
different. I have read some books and music which were brailled
by
RNIB.
The bottom line is this: UEB is a step backward and it's so
complex
that
in my opinion it will hurt braille literacy because it will be
too
hard to
learn.
I'm thankful the BN will still support the current grade 2
braille
and
computer braille.

Hi, I am really behind on mail after being away for a week and
my
PK
broke
just before I went away so I didn't have any computer access
while
away.
To answer your question UEB is still grade two Braille. The idea
behind
it
is to get all English speaking countries using the same Braille
code, but
the US hasn't taken it up. Before UEB was introduced Australia
used
a
different code to New Zealand so we couldn't swap any Braille
between the
two countries because we couldn't understand everything in each
others
code.
Now if all English speaking countries use UEB then it would make
it
easier
for students going overseas to study because they wouldn't have
to
learn
a
hole new code for the country they are in. With electronic
Braille
it
doesn't matter as much as long as the computer can convert
between
the
codes.
I hope this answers your questions. Let me know if you want to
know
more.
Better go I have heaps more emails to look at and I have to get
my
PK
ready
to post back to the shop for tomorrow.

Do you mean grade 2 braille is no longer produced in your
country?
How
terrible! Just think of how much space and paper a book would
take
using
this awful code! I hope the US doesn't replace the grade 2
braille
code
with the UEB code! That would be a step backwards!
