Hi Jim,

The format markers you are seeing are those from the Microsoft Word document
itself. You will generally see these markers if you place your cursor on a
specific letter with the cursor. You shouldn't see many of these markers if
you are simply reading the document using the navigation keys to move
through what you are reading. If the document is being used in your PK, PC
or is going around the office, you should leave it undisturbed especially if
it isn't a document you originated. Just pass it on as is. If you have the
default braille settings, you can save the document to clipboard and paste
the clipboard into a new document or save the document into another type of
document or translate it to another document type. This usually removes the
format markers. Doing all of the above will preserve the original document.
I fully realize one can't print or emboss with the PK but you could do the
above, place the document into any BN you might have access to and print or
emboss from the BN. When converting that Microsoft Word document to a
braille document, make a .txt document out of it first, then translate the
.txt document to a braille document. I have found though saving contents of
the file into clipboard and placing clipboard into a new document works well
especially if your default settings are braille. You may need to edit the
braille document before embossing however. I've done all of what I
described when brailling the state newsletter.

Subject: [Braillenote] Format Markers

I use a Braille Note PK with Keysoft 7.2. In addition, I tend to work
with MS Word doc files because they work well with my office technology.
In the files, I keep getting things called format markers. The PK
manual does not tell me much about these things and how to get rid of
them. Can anyone help me understand what their purpose is and whether
they can or should be removed from files? Many thanks in advance!
