Malaina, The maps for GPS can be on any storage media, including: SD cards, CompactFlash, thumb drives, hard drives, etc. The thing to keep in mind is to make sure you change the maps directory by going to the options list by pressing O and M for maps and POI folder. I wouldn't recommend walking with a thumb drive in your unit, it may break your USB port.
