Can you read rtf files produced on a system where you can read
it's .doc files?

take a look at this, as it is a format which as far as i am aware

be read by virtually all word processors, and retains a
considerable
amount of formatting when it is required. It is also usually
smaller
than Microsoft's .doc format, which is very convenient for me
personally.
