Ray,

The Index Basic D may be used with the BrailleNote, but you will need to use
the serial port and not the USB connection. The USB port on the Index Basic D
is not a true USB port and the mPower doesn't have the necessary software to
handle the Index USB.

The following is an extract from some instructions that I prepared for another
client for using an mPower with an Index D.

Use the black null modem cable that comes with the BrailleNote for the serial
cable. This is important.

Operation of Embosser over Serial Port.

As mentioned at the beginning of this document, if you are wishing to use the
Index with an mPower BrailleNote you will need to use the Serial cable
connection. You may also use the Serial Connection with the Classic
BrailleNote. You must also change the BrailleNote's Embosser Setting list to
match the serial connection settings. This is described in the next section.

To use the Serial connection you must connect the Embosser using the serial
cable provided (BrailleNote Null modem cable), which has 9 way female sockets
at both ends of the cable.

To select the serial communication option on the Embosser, you must take the
Embosser Off Line, then press the Set-up B button. This is labelled with the
letter B. Return the printer On Line by pressing the On Line button. The
Embosser will remember that you have selected Set-up B as the default start up
configuration and it will start using Set-up B each time the Embosser is
switched on. The Embosser sign-on message will also say that Set-up B is
loaded.

If you wish to return the unit to Parallel port operation, simply take the
Embosser Off Line, then press Set-up A, and put the Embosser back On Line.

BrailleNote Setting for Serial Port Operation.

Go to the KeyWord Menu, then select Emboss a Document, and the type S to set-up
the embosser.

Once in the Embosser Set-up List, move through and check that the paper length
is 29 lines, and that it is indicating that the embosser is set to emboss both
sides of the page. At the Embosser Port? prompt type S for Serial. This will
then open up all the parameters associated with the serial port. Check that
the settings are set to: Baud Rate 9600, Parity None, Number of data bits 8,
Handshaking Software, then exit the embosser set-up list and press Y to confirm
your changes.

After these changes have been made any file that you emboss will be printed as
40 characters per row with 29 lines per page. If you want to include page
number, go to the Format Menu, select Layout, and move through the list until
you locate the item "Emboss Page Numbers".

Subject: [Braillenote] Embossing from the BN mPower to the Basic D

Hello All:

I'm working with a student who is running the Braille Note mPower with
Keysoft Version 7.2. She wants to be able to emboss directly to a Basic
D embosser.

Does HW or anyone else have drivers for the BN mPower that can be
downloaded so you can emboss onto the Basic D? Does HW have plans to
support the Index embossers, including the Basic D and if so, when?

Thanks,
