good afternoon
it would be good to have a more powerful BrailleNote using standard storage
devices like sd cards or thumb drives which would be hidden behind a draw or
some cover.
we need to realise that BN is not a computer and was never meant to be one.
It is meant to be a PDA and if it is a BT then a PDA that a six year old
child can learn Braille on and progress to a computer later. I use most of
its programmes and it goes everywhere with me. Before I had one I had no
sortable address list nor a proper diary nor an easy to use device with
built in BRL display which I could use to conduct or teach classes to the
lads at Boys' Brigade. Further its command structure is so very consistent
and its help facility is based upon menus which makes the learning of the
interface very easy. Further KeySoft does not pretend to be windows but
provides a very good set of functions or programmes that an average person
might need in daily life. I don't even try to sink my BN with the computer
because I refuse to use outlook anyway. The key limitation as I see is the
lack of multi-tasking and difficulty using the net.
I am the totally blind student undertaking a masters developing a new human
computer interface model for Braille keyboard devices. I find that the
command structure of the BN BT co-insides well with the guidelines for good
HCI developed by Schneederman and which fits well with the usability
attribute model developed by Adikari et al 2006.
there are a couple of limitations that will be discussed in my thesis in the
creation of the new model.
the concept of 'group navigation' and 'object navigation' and 'interacting
with objects' and 'restriction of navigation to the contents of a object'
will be covered in the new model I will develop. The new model will use
existing keymappings from the BN and concepts such as function keys and an
FN key.
An interesting concept might be an open source operating system and place
only the human computer interface from keysoft on top of this open source OS
However, using windows is not important because keysoft runs on top of
windows and the user never interacts with windows controls or concepts.
If we had a terminal under say the utilities or options menu then
experienced Linux users could run all sorts of programmes on the BN and the
BN could be used to programme routers and other networking devices.
