Hello everyone, I was wondering (step-by-step instructions please)
how to set the BN as a braille display using a serial connection?
Thanks, Zach
A question: Do you have a USB port on your computer? If all you
have are USB ports, it is a simple matter of going to your local
electronics/computer store and purchasing a serial to USB
converter. Connect the one end of the cable to your BrailleNote;
then connect the end which has the USB converter to the USB port on
your computer. In Windows, you have to have your operating system
and screenreader to recognize that you have a braille device plugged
into your USB port. I believe this is done through your Device
Manager. Once the two devices are connected, set your BrailleNote
to Braille Terminal; you should be able to read the contents from
the screen. It is a little more complicated in Windows as opposed
to the Mac (which I have). With the Mac, you simply plug the end of
the cable that has your USB converter into the Mac; all new Macs
have just USB ports. Once you have the two devices connected,
Leopard (Apple's operating system) will recognize your braille
device; no drivers needed because BrailleNote is one of the braille
devices supported by Leopard and VoiceOver, Apple's built-in
screenreader. HTH. Richie Gardenhire, Anchorage, Alaska.
