Would you send me a sentence, exactly like you're doing it? I'll
save it in grade two, and let me see what it does. This is odd.
I asked you about punctuation, because the word were is not
recognized with punctuation after it.

There was originally a space on either side. At first, there was
a line
break before the word but I added a word or 2 before it to move
the line
break. When that didn't work, I tried it on a blank line by
itself. It still
didn't work. I haven't tried it with punctuation.
