When working through a large number of e-mail messages, one technique which has helped me is to limit the size of the messages which can be downloaded.

In keymail, go to the setup menu and choose receive options. Set the maximum size to something small, like 5k or 10k. Now, during download, files which are larger than the size you set will trigger a prompt that the e-mail is larger than that size. You then have options to delete the message, download it, skip it or see the first 10 lines.

If you skip or delete the large messages, you effectively thin out the material to be downloaded at the moment. The smaller messages come through; and while there may be a lot of them, they don't take up as much room or as much time to download. You allow the BN, so to speak, to drink out of a regular water faucet rather than asking it to drink out of a fire hose. Once you've been through the short messages (and probably deleted a lot of them), you can go back and reset the maximum size for automatic download to something larger. Or you can leave that setting and just hit enter when prompted that the e-mail is larger than the size you set.

Using this technique, the larger messages don't slow down the initial download, and available disk space is less of an issue. When the larger messages trigger the prompt about their size, you can hit i for information and, if the subject line tells you that you don't want that message anyway, you can delete it without waiting for the whole message to download.

Subject: [Braillenote] Handling large amounts of email on the
braille note

Hi everyone. I was away last week and had a lot of email to
download. When
I went to check it in keymail it took a long time to go from
message to
message. I also got an error message that said the operation was
successful. I had to delete some of the things in keylist and
recopy stuff
in order to fix it but I lost all of my email in the progress.
How have you
handled large amounts of email and is there an easy way to do
this using the
bn? Thanks.
