Hello there,
Several have given their initial impressions of the Apex; well,
now it's my turn. I have been using the Apex for almost two
weeks. I appreciate that we all make differing uses of these
devices; I have no PC and rely therefore on my Apex for
communication both in the receipt of messages and the printing of
letters and associated documents. I find the Braille keyboard
one of the best I have used. It is extremely reactive, and the
slightly lighter touch, and smaller key movement, compared with
the Mpower, makes it a fast Braille writing device. However,, I
can appreciate that a beginner in Braille may make more mistakes,
due to this lightness of touch. My advice would be persevere for
the rewards are great. The ability of the Apex to deal with
excesively large files, I found a revelation. A friend had sent
me, on a cdrom, several radio productions including "The Lord of
the rings", this was a production in 13 one hour episodes
contained in one folder. I was able to move the whole folder
from the cdrom on to an sd card, in one movement. Now, I know
that you people who have available Pc's, may not find this
awesome, but I was truly amazed.
now for a couple of not so goods. There seems to be a fault
relating to the backing-up of databases. One is told that the
cdb file, on the medium on to which one is copying the database,
is protected. This means that new information cannot be copied
into it. Investigation reveals that this file is in fact not
"protected." Fortunately, my experiences were duplicated at
headquarters, and I gather Canada, or at least a small part of
it, has been informed. I also note, as I mentioned to the list
earlier, that the "landscape" printing command in the format
menu, is non-operative. This also was confirmed, and, I gather,
the relevant authority has been told. I look forward to
corrections in the not too distant future, so that I can once
again write my bank cheques and other similar documents
successfully. The radeaio facility is almost certainly
marginally better. However, I personally will probably not be
making use of it, for I live 50 miles from the nearest
transmitter and portable radios seem not to fare wel; in this
area. Sluggish in the extreme is my 120 gb hard-drive, but I
know I'm not the only one to have noticed this shortcoming.
My general impressions are very positive and I certainly do not
regret having made the decision to upgrade. However, I still
believe the Mpower to be a very good unit which has assisted me
greatly since its introduction.
Don Cooper. (UK)
