this topic contained the question but not the answer unless I managed to
miss it.  The answer has not to my knowledge ever appeared when the topic
has come up on ViPhone either.

Hello Dean and others using the IPhone with the Apex.
You can easily get to  the IPhone's home screen usign the Apex by 
pressing
the advance and previous keys  simultaneously.
Also, I suggest visiting a website called
www.applevis.com
I think there are some good resources there.
