You are most likely hitting space-i, even if you don't realize it. This toggles on a jaws compatibility mode and, as you discovered, stops normal functionality in the terminal. Next time it happens, just hit space-i again to get out of this mode. This is also why you hear a beep when entering terminal mode; the single beep indicates normal terminal mode, while the double beep indicates the jaws mode. Space-i switches between the two.
