Hi folks,
After reading Marvin's notes on attaching KeyBase definition
files, I decided to conduct some tests on attaching some
additional file types (mostly native KeySoft types) with the
following results:
* Attaching error: when you attach a KeySoft native file such as
KeyBase definition file, you'll be asked to attach KeyWord file
as another file type. If you say yes, a list of file types will
be given, with the last item being "same as source file." At this
point, you'll be thinking, "let's see if I can just tell KeyMail
to treat this file as just another KeySoft file" and decide to
select the last option. When you do this, an error will be
printed, saying, "exception: command, 399 at memory address.
Access violation reading 0." This occurs if you were attempting
to attach any KeySoft native file types (docs or not) and if you
were to attach the file as is (for instance, attempting to attach
KeyBase definition file as KBS file type).
* Attaching database files: If you wish to attach databases, keep
the following:
1. If you wish to preserve records, attach both database
definition and the database file itself (hidden by default) as a
compressed archive (availible only under 9.1 and later).
2. If you wish to just send the field definitions, attach kbs
only in a zip file.
3. When you attach any KeyBase file type in other file formats
(such as ASCII text), the recipient will not be able to change
file extensions as KeySoft hides them. So if the recipient
attempts to rename say, "definition.txt" to "definition.kbs," it
will not work (as to why, I'll leave it up to you to figure it
out).
Thus, the most effective way to send KeySoft native files using
source file type is by archiving them as a single zip file (and
zipping is something that I'm sure mPower users would want in the
end). This procedure applies to the following file types:
KeyWord braille and text, KeyBase definitions, KeyList address
list, computer braille tables, unicode tables and pronunciation
dictionary (among others). Thanks.
Cheers,
Joseph
