Hi, Peter. You would need either an infrared or serial connection. It is getting harder and harder to find serial cables for most phones that took them at one time as everything is going USB. There is no special software, just configuring things correctly. So, If you can't find a serial cable for your phone, it needs to be capable of infrared.
