I don't understand Bob. There IS a way to connect and disconnect without going through email. Like Jonathan said, if you just want to connect to the internet, press i from the main menu, type in the url you wish to visit or select it from your favorites, and hit enter. You will then be directed to select a service to call, and off you go. No email involved whatsoever.
As for disconnecting, go to the options menu and press w. So I think the weary stares you think you're getting are really people just scratching their heads thinking, "Huh?" lol. I'm probably just misunderstanding you though, so feel free to clarify.
