Ann, Some things you have to consider here. Though it is true, like what others have said, that pressing L at the appointment time field will set the birthday as an all-day event, remember that the time is marked as free. If you have read my post on tips relating to v5.1, I had a reminder that free appointments are not announced by the Display Future Appointments command (ENTER with N or FUNCTION with N). Thus, if you want to be reminded about this birthday, then you should mark the time as busy (press B).
Alternatively, you can set an alarm as your reminder for that all-day event. However, keep in mind that the default time for an all-day event is midnight, 12 AM, which is really the beginning of that day. Thus, if you enter a warning time of 0 minutes so that the alarm will go off at the appointment time itself, you will be rudely waken up at midnight unless you're a night owl like me. Since you would probably need enough time to buy presents for the birthday person, you might want to schedule an alarm to ring hours or days before the birthday itself. Remember that this can be done. At the warning time prompt, type a number followed by the letter sign (dots 5-6) for the BT models, then h for hours to have the alarm ring hours before 12 AM. Or, type a number followed by a letter sign (dots 5-6) for BT models then d for days to set an alarm a day or so before the birthday starts. If you want a warning time of a week or weeks before the all-day event, type the number followed by w (no need for a letter sign on the BT). You can also type a combination of hours, days and weeks as the warning time, just follow the pattern above and use spaces to separate the hours, days and weeks, no commas or any other punctuations. If you want the alarm to go off during the day itself, say at around 9:30 AM so that you can give the person a birthday call, you would need to schedule a specific-time appointment and not an all-day event.
