Hi Brenda, The battery gauge of the BrailleNote could become inaccurate about once every three months. You can check to see if your gauge is accurate by going to the Support Information Mode and issuing the proper commands. In the User Guide, you can access information about this mode if you need to by looking us "Support Information Mode" in the index. I don't run down my battery every time the battery low or critical message comes up, and I also don't run it down before charging. The gauge will report accurate information about the battery for a certain period of time without it having to be run down. You'll notice when you need to re-calibrate the gauge (running down the battery to make the gauge accurate again) because you'll see battery low or even critical messages, and when you check the gauge, it will be above 10 percent. Also, the battery critical message usually (in my experience) would either come up instead of the low message or would appear very shortly after, which wouldn't happen normally. About charging before the warnings come up, I've done this several times; I've done it, for example, when my battery was maybe at 20 or 15 percent, and I didn't want to have to worry about battery problems. When I did this, the BrailleNote's gauge stayed accurate, and it wouldn't give me false info by giving me low or critical messages at the point at which I charged. If you charge before warnings appear, it will take less time to charge than from a lower battery level, although the unit can stay indefinitely plugged into the adapter. Although I used to use a Braille 'n Speak, I'm not quite sure to what you're referring Brenda because I don't think I ever knew how to run down the battery, and I wasn't aware that it was both possible and necessary. However, I hope this helps you with your question. Maria
