Hi paul, I have 3 entries in my directory of services. One is for a standard dialup using the bn internal modem. The second is for connecting via my network card which I use primarily here at home. The third is for connecting via my cell phone (not working at the moment).
I use the authentication server only on the entry for my cell phone. If I go somewhere such as a hotel which allows me to connect to their network, I would have to change the smtp entry in my network directory of services entry to send mail through the authentication server. The reason I don't need this on my home network is that I have a dsl connection and the router automatically logs onto earhtlink when I turn that on. So, as far as earthlink is concerned, I'm really calling as a logged on earthlink user if you know what I mean. So, I'm really not attempting to send email from outside the earthlink servers at all.
