Karen,

You're having really weird problems all at once. You did say you tried a
simple reset and it didn't work. Have you tried RESET with dots 1-2-3 (F, D,
S) held down, and then a simple reset again to go back to the Keysoft version
you're currently running? If so and that still didn't work, then have you tried
a RESET with dots 4-5-6 (J, K, L) held down where you have to reset the clock
and calendar? If so and it still didn't fix your problems, then have you tried
reinstalling the Keysoft version you're using? If none of these work, then read
on and try this if and only if you're willing to restore all the things that
will be reset.

The file containing information about all your settings in all the menus, the
position of cursors in files when you last exited them, the personalized
folders in Keymail and the messages sorted into them, etc., is the Keysoft.ksd
file found in the Dictionaries folder of the Flash Disk. If you delete that,
all settings will revert to the factory defaults and you will lose the
customized folders in Keymail but definitely not their contents, and cursors in
all documents and books will be at the top of the file as you open each but you
will certainly not lose any file. In other words, your BrailleNote will be
like how it was when you first got it, but with all data in the file or e-mail
area still intact.
Therefore, this is a safe thing to do, but make sure you don't mind configuring
everything again.

Before attempting to do this, look at the following list of things that you
must change to your liking:

a) You must select the default language used when prompted for it after the BN
is reinitialized.
If your preferred language is not offered by default, press SPACE with dots 4-6
(CTRL with BACKSPACE) to cycle through the available languages, if there's more
than one, and hit ENTER to select your choice.

b) You will have to set the clock and calendar as well.

c) You will need to specify the internal modem country setting. You can find
out what you have set currently by going into Keymail, pressing S then I, and
see what the BN says. After reinitializing the BN and you're prompted for
this, cycle through the options with SPACE with dots 3-4 (CTRL with BACKSPACE).

d) Set the Preferred Reading Grade to grade 2, when prompted to do so. If you
do not get that prompt upon reinitializing, then open a document later, then go
into the Options Menu, press B for the Braille Display options, and navigate to
that item to check, and change if necessary, its setting. Also check the item
next to that, the Text Document Reading Grade, and see if it's set to
"Preferred Reading Grade".

e) If you changed the way new line markers appear, the shape of your grade 2
and computer Braille cursors, the function of the PREVIOUS and NEXT thumb keys,
etc., configure them to your preference but do so by first opening a document
in Keyword and entering the Options Menu, Braille display Options.

f) If you customized the order of your thumb keys, you must configure them
again in the Options Menu. Likewise, if you changed anything in the Keyboard
and Review Voice settings, then configure them as well from the defaults in the
Options Menu.

g) If you changed the settings under the Internet Options Menu in Keyweb, then
configure them to your liking the next time you use the web browser (while on a
web page, press ENTER with M or CTRL with 2).

h) Enter the Keymail Setup Menu (type E from the Main Menu then S), and select
the Address List option. The fields for your name and address are blank after
reinitialization of the BN so you must type in the name and address you want to
be displayed on the headers of e-mails you send out.

i) If you have created folders in Keymail other than the default ones called
Inbox, Outbox, Sent, Received, All, Drafts and Trash, you must create them
again. Don't worry, all your saved messages are still there but they're lumped
in the Sent or Received folder. You can easily sort them out by using the Find
option in Keymail, and if ever you need instructions to do this in case you do
reinitialize your BN, then post again and I'll give you step-by-step
instructions.

j) Remember that whenever you open a file, the cursor will be at the top and
not where you know you last left it before reinitializing the BN. With a book,
you must locate your last cursor position and that's the only hassle really.
Place markers will also be erased. However, you will not lose any data or file.

k) If you have changed the default settings in the Embosser Setup, Printer
Setup and Format Menus, you must configure them once more. You would also need
to re-establish a partnership with Active Sync, I believe, but I'm not sure
since I don't use Active Sync.

l) You may lose your spell checker as well, but don't worry if that happens,
there's a painless way of getting it back and you can ask on list if you don't
know.

OK, Karen, if you're willing to go through all the trouble of resetting
everything, in exchange for the possibility of fixing your problems right now
without having to send in your unit, then do the following:

1) Remove a cf card, PCMCIA card, or disk drive that may be connected to your
BN.

2) Enter the File Manager (press F from the Main Menu). Type D for the
Directory option.

3) Select the Flash Disk as the drive and Dictionaries as the folder. Press
SPACE with X (READ with X) to view all, including hidden, files.

4) Navigate to the file called Keysoft.ksd. Press BACKSPACE with C (CTRL with
I) and type Y for yes to confirm deletion of the file.

5) Without exiting, press RESET with no keys held down. When the BN starts
talking again, it will be using the default rate (4), pitch (8) and volume
(20). If this is not what you're using, it would sound freakingly slow but
that's all right. It's just the factory default voice settings. You can
easily change that using the commands you already know.

Okey dokey, if ever you go down this route, Karen, I have a strong feeling it
will fix your problems. In the event that I'm wrong, only then do you need to
consider sending it in for repairs, but honestly, your problems don't sound
like you need to do that.

I really hope this helps,
Roselle
