Riana and Laura,

Actually, let's answer Laura's question first. I also delete stuff from a
received message, mainly to save space. For instance, I delete your
signature... LOL! Just kidding, of course I don't touch that, it may carry a
curse of some sort. Anyway, I receive forwarded messages, and some posts from
mailing lists that I would like to keep. However, it has several original
messages quoted in it, which I don't really need and would be itching to send
to limbo.

Now for Riana's question. You're correct in thinking that if you turn off the
review mode in a received message, you would be able to erase some parts in it.
I don't remember right now if I read that in the User's Guide or some old
Readme file because there was a bug with it even in the 3.xx versions. Here's
how things had evolved.

Before, you could turn off the review mode, delete some parts of that message
and exit to save. When you open the message, however, there is this funny
character (I can't recall exactly, I think "character 689" or something) at the
top of the message body, but at least the message itself is revised (I mean,
the parts you deleted are no longer there). If the revised message is in the
Inbox, and you do not move it to another folder, the other e-mails in the Inbox
will appear to contain the revised contents of that particular message. It
would be fixed once the revised message is moved to another folder. If you are
in a folder other than the Inbox, the other messages would look weird until you
delete that revised message. In other words, it was useless to even attempt
revision.

In version 5, you'd think the problem was fixed because the weird character is
no longer there. You still have to exit the folder you're in and open it again
so that the other e-mails would not contain the revised contents of that
message. But lo and behold, when you open the supposedly revised message after
exiting and re-entering that folder, the message reverts back to its original
form. In other words, the bug isn't fixed, just... umm, revised! LOL!

What then do I do to revise received messages? I access the contents of the
e-mail database through the Keylist Menu. The result, however, will still have
that weird character on top of the message body. Riana, is it really necessary
that you edit that message? Or can you just save it to a text document in the
Flash Disk or cf/storage card? If you can just save it, then I suggest you do
that by following these steps:

1) Open the message you wish to edit. Press SPACE with X (READ with X) to turn
off the Review Mode. Do the necessary revisions.

2) Instead of exiting the message after revising, press SPACE with S (CTRL with
S). You will be asked for the file name, but rather than typing one, press
BACKSPACE twice to get to the drive prompt, and hit SPACE to select the Flash
Disk where you tap the ENTER key.

3) You will be asked next to select the folder. SPACE through the items and
hit ENTER on your choice.

4) At the file name prompt, press BACKSPACE with X (CTRL with X) until you hear
"Create a Keyword text document" or whatever text file type you prefer (ASCII
text, Microsoft Word, or Rich Text format). Then type the file name (no need
for an extension), and press ENTER.

5) Exit the message and either trash it or leave it in its original form in
whichever folder.

On the other hand, if you want to keep a revised copy in your e-mail database,
then do the following but do it exactly as instructed:

1) Using the File Manager, copy the file Email Folders.cdb (found in the
Keylist folder, if you view its contents with all, including hidden, files
showing), to a storage or compact flash card, or to another folder in the Flash
Disk. Note that I said "copy" not "move".

2) From the Main Menu, press A for the Address List.

3) Type S to select a different definition file.

4) Press SPACE to enter the list of items to choose from, then BACKSPACE until
you get to the folder prompt. SPACE through the folders offered and select the
Keymail folder. Hit ENTER.

5) Press SPACE to select the Email Folders definition file. Hit ENTER. You
will be returned to the Keylist Menu.

6) Type L for Lookup. Your VN/BN will say or display "Please wait". It may
also say nothing but would just sit there dead silent. You must wait
nevertheless. It is sorting out the contents of the e-mail database for use in
the Keylist Menu. I must stress that you SHOULD NOT DO ANYTHING that will
interrupt this. Do not turn it off, do not press RESET, do not let the
batteries go flat. Just wait, wait, and wait for as long as it takes. The
length of time will depend on how many messages you have stored in the
database. More messages mean more eternities to wait. For example, if I have
around 600 messages in the database, it takes about 17 minutes. It's important
that you do not interrupt it because if you do, then you will corrupt the
database. If you do get impatient and decide not to continue with this, then
you can hit RESET, and then copy the Email Folders.cdb file I have instructed
you in Step 1 to save somewhere else to the Keylist folder where it should repla
ce the corrupted Email Folders.cdb there.

7) If you were patient enough, or if you only had few messages so the wait was
not excruciatingly long, you will be placed in the selection list for fields to
lookup. You will see familiar fields like "To", "CC", "BCC", "Subject",
"From", etc. If you know the whole subject line or part of it, then type it in
the Subject field. If you remember only the name or address of the person it
was from, then type it in the From field. You can also look for the record by
pressing SPACE with dots 5-6 (READ with 9) to move forward or SPACE with dots
2-3 (READ with 7) to move back.

8) When you've found the record for the message you wish to revise, navigate to
the Body field and hit ENTER. You will be placed in the message itself and you
can revise it as you please.

9) When you're done, press SPACE with E (ESCAPE) to exit, and then SPACE with
dots 2-6 (CTRL with ENTER) to save the changes to the whole record. You can
now exit the Lookup and Keylist Menu by pressing SPACE with E (ESCAPE) until
you are returned to the Main Menu.

10) Finally, enter the Keymail Menu by pressing E from the Main Menu. Press W
to write a message. The VN/BN will again say or display "Please wait", or just
sit there like a stone, but at any rate, you MUST wait, most likely the same
length of time as before in the Keylist Menu. At the end of the century, the
VN/BN will say, "Send to" as it should since you selected the Write An Email
option. You can exit if you do not want to compose a message. You just have
to do this so that the database contents will again be sorted for the use of
the Keymail Menu this time. Again, it is important that the sorting is not
interrupted to prevent corruption of the database. By the way, the next time
you enter the Keylist Menu, you will be asked to select the definition file.
Follow Steps 4 and 5, but instead select the Keylist folder and the Address
List definition file.

HTH,
Roselle
