The following announcement provides detailed Release Notes for KeySoft 4.02 Build 1992, which is released as a self-contained Service Release to KeySoft 4.01. While this is a standalone document, readers may wish to refer to the prior announcement, entitled 'KeySoft 4.02 Overview', which provided an executive summary of the Service Release. This announcement explains in more detail who should consider installing the upgrade, where to download it from, and how to install it on your machine. We apologize for the length of this post, but experience with previous upgrade releases has shown that Clients prefer to be given "more" rather than "less" information. We recommend that you save this email in a safe place, until you are sure that you have no need to refer to it again. KeySoft 5.0 Users reading this document should note that the 26 enhancements detailed below already form part of the KeySoft 5.0 software release. Release Notes Begin: KeySoft 4.02 Build 1992 Release Notes Pulse Data International 10 December 2003, Maurice Sloane, BrailleNote Support Manager Throughout this document, the term BrailleNote applies to all models of the BrailleNote/VoiceNote family of products. The KeySoft 4.02 Service Release is intended for installation in any English base language BrailleNote or VoiceNote product that hasn't already been upgraded to KeySoft 5.0 or later versions, upon their release. KeySoft 4.02 Build 1992 represents the current build of the non- chargeable KeySoft release, and only KeySoft 5.0 includes additional features. Over the three and a half years since the launch of the BrailleNote family of products, there have been numerous improvements to the KeySoft program, and for this reason we would encourage all legacy users to upgrade. In summary, the following clients should consider upgrading to KeySoft 4.02, Build 1992: A. Clients using BrailleNote's or VoiceNote's with the Classic motherboard. These units don't have the additional Compact Flash card slot located on the back panel of the machine. When KeySoft 4.02 is installed, the "Internet" option will be visible on the Main Menu, but will not be accessible. B. Clients using the BrailleNote's or VoiceNote's with the Second Edition motherboard, who have not upgraded to KeySoft 5.0. These units have an additional Compact Flash card slot located on the back panel of the machine, located between the serial and parallel port connectors. The "Internet" option will be visible and active on these units. 2. Who Should NOT Upgrade to KeySoft 4.02? A. Clients with KeySoft 5.0 installed on their machines. This is because KeySoft 5.0 uses the Duxbury Braille translator, and this installs a number of files that will conflict with translation system used in KeySoft 4.02 and prior versions of Keysoft. B. Clients running full French and German ROM versions of KeySoft. In addition to the English base language models of the BrailleNote BT, Pulse Data International also produces French and German base language models of the BrailleNote BT. KeySoft 4.02 should not be installed on those machines. 3. List of Enhancements. KeySoft 4.02 Build 1992 incorporates 26 enhancements that were not provided in the previous KeySoft 4.01 Build 1988. A list of the enhancements and their associated description follows: 3.1. Mobile phone infrared communication support added. [New to KS4.02] An option "Hayes Compatible on Infrared" has been added in the modem list of the Directory of Services. This allows mobile phones equipped with Infrared data communication to be used as a modem via the BrailleNote's Infrared port. 3.2. Change Braille Grade option added. [New to KS4.02] A language and Braille grade change item has been added to the Block Commands menu. This is useful if you need to change the Braille grade of a section of text. For example you may have switched to computer Braille during the preparation of a grade 2 document in order to enter an e-mail address, and subsequently forgotten to switch back to grade 2. Hence even though you entered the subsequent text as grade 2 Braille the BrailleNote interprets the text as computer Braille. Using the change grade option you would mark the section of text that you wanted to be interpreted as grade 2, and then apply a grade 2 setting to the marked text. 3.3. Cursor position now updated in continuous read. [New to KS4.02] When performing a continuous read (Space with G, or Read with G) the cursor will now stop at the last word spoken if any key or thumb key is pressed. This is significant when reading large documents with speech as it means that if any key or thumb key is inadvertently pressed your current cursor position in the document is retained. 3.4. Spell Check correctly replaces capitalised words. [New to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.01 when a document is spell checked, and the misspelled word is capitalized, after selecting the replacement word from the suggestions list the replacement word in the document was no longer capitalized. Handling of capitalised words is included in KeySoft 4.02. 3.5. Spell Check now handles words separated by a slash. [New to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.01 words separated by a slash, such as hot/cold were reported as spelling errors. This has been included in KeySoft 4.02. 3.6. KeyWeb download path now definable. [New to KS4.02] You can now define the download path when downloading files using KeyWeb. In KeySoft 4.01 the download path was permanently set to "\Flash Disk\Downloads". In KeySoft 4.02 build 1992 you are prompted with "Download file into which folder?" and "Download filename?". 3.7. Palm Infrared Visual Display support added. [New to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.01 and earlier versions of KeySoft infrared communication with Palm PDA's being used as Visual Displays was not "user friendly". Improvements have been made to the communication protocol to automatically retry for connection following signal loss and provide audible indication when this has been achieved. Infrared connection now occurs as a background task, and hence doesn't interfere with the operation of KeySoft. The updating of the visual display following deletion of text within the displayed document has been improved. 3.8. Improved ActiveSync Serial Communication Stability. [New to KS4.02] The default serial has now been reduced to 57,600 baud as some PC's have difficulty communicating reliably at 115K baud, which was the previous default. The reduced speed improves stability during the transfer of large files. It is also recommended that User's update ActiveSync on their PC to version 3.7.1. You may also choose one of three serial speed options by going to the Miscellaneous option in the Utilities Menu. At the prompt "ActiveSync Connection?", press Help to obtain a list of the options. 3.9. Braille display of time improved. [Improvement to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.01 and earlier versions the time display on the Braille display would occasionally skip a second. The update frequency of the Braille display has been increased to ensure that the display tracks correctly. 3.10. Touch Cursor Position now retained on exiting file. [Improvement to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 the cursor position was not retained on exiting a file after pressing a Touch Cursor to relocate the cursor prior to exiting the file. This has been included in KeySoft 4.02. 3.11. Options Menu and Information Mode can now be entered from Main Menu. [Improvement to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 pressing Enter on these items in the Main Menu relating to obtaining Information and entering the Options Menu caused an error beep. In KeySoft 4.02 pressing Enter on either of these items will take you to that function as it does for other items in the Main Menu. 3.12. Change to prompt order on exiting KeyMail. [Improvement to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 if you exited with items in the Trash folder and email to be sent you were first prompted if you wanted to empty the Trash. Because this operation can take a significant amount of time if there are a large number of items in the Trash, this delayed the point at which you received the option to send your email. In KeySoft 4.02 the order of the exit prompts has been reversed, offering the option to send email first. This allows the "quick" sending of unsent messages without having to wait for Trash operations to complete. 3.13. AC Adapter On/Off Message functions in Braille Terminal mode. [Improvement to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.01 when the BrailleNote is set to work as a Braille Terminal, the standard AC Adapter On/Off messages are not spoken or displayed when the Adapter is plugged in and out. If the adapter was inadvertently removed while in "Terminal for Screen Reader" mode it could have meant that the battery was flattened unbeknown to the User. In KeySoft 4.02 the AC Adapter On/Off messages are displayed in "Terminal for Screen Reader" mode. 3.14. Braille prompts added in KeyMail. [Improvement to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 a number of prompts were voiced but not displayed on the Braille display. For example, "message exceeded maximum size", and "do you want to stay connected?". These have been included in KeySoft 4.02. 3.15. Braille prompts added in KeyWeb. [Improvement to KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 you could not navigate properly from input control to input control; ie, You jump to the first one after changing navigation type with Space +T followed by I, but then you got stuck at that point. This has been improved in KeySoft 4.02. 3.16. Rectification of spasmodic file corruption on saving file. [Fixed in KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0, and usually when working with large files, User's occasionally experienced partial or full data loss on exiting the working file. This was often accompanied by messages such as "parameter is incorrect". KeySoft 5.0 provided improved management of memory resources when handling large files, and our field experience with KeySoft 5.0 indicates that the reliability of data saving has been significantly improved. KeySoft 4.02 incorporates the same improvements as have been implemented in KeySoft 5.0. 3.17. Rectification of errors following block operations with Word documents. [Fixed in KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.01 and earlier versions file errors could occur following copy, paste, store and insert operations dependent on the content of the documents being worked on. This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 3.18. Pronunciation Dictionary now handles hyphenated words. [Fixed in KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 typing a miss-spelt word that contained a hyphen could cause the BrailleNote to report "Error in Pronunciation Dictionary" next time the BrailleNote was reset. This rendered the Pronunciation Dictionary un-useable. This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 3.19. Potential Planner lockup fixed. [Fixed in KS4.02] Although not a valid command, in KeySoft 4.0 performing a "Go to" command from within the Planner would cause the BrailleNote to lockup if you pressed F or B by itself followed by the Enter key. The F and B command are normally followed by criteria such as W (week), M (month) etc, but if they are inadvertently omitted it should not have caused the BrailleNote to lock up. This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 3.20. Planner alarm issues addressed. [Fixed in KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 there were issues relating to Planner alarms that occurred during the time that the BrailleNote was switched off. The first was that after cancelling the alarm by pressing c, the alarm reappeared 5 minutes later on the Braille display but without sound, and with a phantom time stamp. The second was that while in the "switched off" mode the BrailleNote was not switched on long enough to fully announce the spoken messages, so that when you next switched on the alarm information reappeared. In KeySoft 4.02 these 2 problems have been fixed, and the BrailleNote will now also go to the Alarm Options Menu if you switch on during an alarm. 3.21. Export to Plain Braille file fully functional. [Fixed in KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 this was not working correctly when appending or replacing to the same file name. This was caused by BrailleNote saving plain Braille files with a "txt" rather than a "brf" extension. This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 3.22. Function of Previous and Next thumb keys now retained after Reset. [Fixed in KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.01 the function of the Previous and Next thumb keys was not retained following a reset, if they had been changed from the standard "Up and Down" setting to "Paragraph and Section". This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 3.23. Can now Delete folders containing protected files. [Fixed in KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.01 attempting to erase a folder containing protected files caused the BrailleNote to continuously loop around the files indicating that they were protected. This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 3.24. Copying protected files now retains protected attribute. In KeySoft 4.0 when a protected file was copied to a storage card, it was not protected on the card. [Fixed in KS4.02] This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 3.25. Missing increase volume command added under Options Menu. [Fixed in KS4.02] In KeySoft 4.0 the increase volume command "Enter with dot 4" was omitted from the list of commands given at the bottom of the Options Menu. This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 3.26. VoiceNote Task Menu content corrected. [Fixed in KS4.02] In VoiceNote models there was an item in the Task Menu for "Terminal for Screen Reader", which is obviously not available as these units don't have Braille displays. This has been fixed in KeySoft 4.02. 4. The Upgrade Process. Installation of the KeySoft 4.02 Service Release and associated documentation may be thought of as a 3-step process. Dependent on your machine, and the version of KeySoft currently installed, it may not be necessary to perform Step 3. Step 1: Download and install the KeySoft 4.02 Install package. Step 2: Determine your current User Guide. Step 3: Download and Install any necessary Manual files. So, let's now have a look at each of the 3 steps. 4.1. Step 1: Download and install the KeySoft 4.02 Install package. Before installing the upgrade, you should follow good computing practice, and make a back up of your system. The KeySoft 4.02 Build 1992, Install Package is the same for both Classic and Second Edition machines. Details on where to obtain the Install Package are given in Section 5, and installation instructions are provided in Section 6. If during the installation, you get the message that there is insufficient room to install the upgrade, you will have to perform some file housekeeping to free up extra space on the Flash disk. 4.2. Step 2: Determine your current User Guide. To get the best out of the version 4.02 release, you should make sure that you have the KeySoft version 4.0 User Guide installed on your machine. The easiest way to determine this is to bring up the electronic User Guide from Options Menu, and go to the Table of Contents. If you have the version 4.0 User Guide, it will show "Web Browser" in the table of contents. This entry comes after the "Email" topic. It also pays to check access to the User Guide from the Index. If you have the correct Index file, and associated User Guide files, you should be prompted with "Web Page Topics" when you type "w". If you select the topic "Moving to another page", you should be taken to section 12.6 of the Electronic User Guide. 4.3. Step 3: Download and Install any necessary Manual files. If you don't already have the Version 4.0 User Guide installed, clients with Classic machines may go to the download site and select the manual installation package appropriate to your machine. For example if you are in the USA, and you have a Classic BrailleNote BT, download the package "Classic BNBT USA Manuals". The "Classic" manual packages will only install on machines that have the Classic motherboard. Clients with the Second Edition motherboard who haven't got the version 4 Manual should email [EMAIL PROTECTED] giving their machine type, serial number, and country of residence. We will then email you the appropriate manual installation package and instructions on how to install it. 5. Where to Obtain the Upgrade. All files, with the exception of the Version 4.0 Manual installation packages for machines with the Second Edition motherboard, may be downloaded from Pulse Data International's web page. The following URL will take you directly to the Download page. http://www.pulsedata.com/products/blindness/braillenote_downloads.asp If you are navigating to the download page from the www.pulsedata.com home page, don't select the "Text Only" mode, as the files displayed on the "Text Only" download page may still refer to the KeySoft 4.01 Release. This will be updated, but it may be a couple of weeks before this is done. On the Download page you will find the following 12 links, relevant to the installation of KeySoft 4.02, displayed in the order presented below. Installing KeySoft 4.02. 6.1. Reset Procedures. During installation of KeySoft 4.02, you will instructed in the documentation, or by your BrailleNote, to perform various types of resets. For example, the BrailleNote may instruct: "System Files have been updated. Press Reset". It is important to follow the requested reset instructions, of which there are three possibilities, and these are detailed below. 6.1.1. Press Reset. This means: Press the Reset switch, located in the recess behind the On/Off Switch. No keyboard keys should be held down while the Reset switch is being pressed. You should hear a beep immediately after pressing the Reset switch, followed by a short chime some 10 to 15 seconds later. After the chime, you should hear the KeySoft sign on message, indicating the software version. Pressing the Reset switch without any keys held down restarts the BrailleNote and if present, loads the KeySoft upgrade installed on the Flash Disk. 6.1.2 Press Reset with dots 1-2-3 (f-d-s). For units with Braille keyboards, this means: Hold down the keys representing dots 1, 2 and 3, and while continuing to hold them down, press the Reset switch. Don't release the keys until the speech restarts. For units with computer style keyboards, this means: Hold down the f, d and s keys, and while continuing to hold them down, press the Reset switch. Don't release the keys until the speech restarts. You should hear a beep immediately after pressing the Reset switch, followed by a short chime some 5 to 10 seconds later. After the chime, you should hear the KeySoft sign on message, indicating the software version. Reset with dots 1-2-3 (f-d-s) forces the BrailleNote to load the version of KeySoft burnt into the ROM. 6.1.3 Press Reset with dots 4-5-6 (j-k-l). For units with Braille keyboards, this means: Hold down the keys representing dots 4, 5 and 6, and while continuing to hold them down, press the Reset switch. Don't release the keys until the speech restarts. For units with computer style keyboards, this means: Hold down the j, k and l keys, and while continuing to hold them down, press the Reset switch. Don't release the keys until the speech restarts. You should hear a beep immediately after pressing the Reset switch, followed by a short chime some 15 to 20 seconds later. After the chime, you should hear the KeySoft sign on message, indicating the software version. Reset with dots 4-5-6 (j-k-l) clears the RAM portion of the KeySoft System Disk and if present, loads the KeySoft upgrade installed on the Flash Disk. This reset allows new system files to be installed into the KeySoft System Disk. The Date and Time will require resetting following a Reset with dots 4-5-6 (j-k-l). 6.2. Set the Time and Date. 6.4.15. At the prompt, "System Files have been updated. Press Reset". Perform the reset as requested. 6.4.16. KeySoft 4.02 build 1992 should now be installed and running. 7. Installing the Version 4.0 Manuals on Classic Machines. The installation process only applies to machines with the Classic Motherboard, and installs the KeySoft 4 User Guide, the Spelling Dictionary, and the Classic Readme file. Instructions are provided for installing from either a plug-in memory card or using the ActiveSync Installer. 7.1. Required Files. The Classic manual package appropriate to your machine. (See below for how to choose this) The package places a copy of the "Classic KeySoft Software 4.01 Readme.txt" file in the General folder, overwrites the original KeySoft User Guide files with the updated KeySoft 4.0 files, and installs the Spelling Dictionary. To select the appropriate manual package, you must determine your machine type and country settings. For example, if you are in the USA and have a BrailleNote BT, download the item "Classic BNBT USA Manuals". If you are in the UK or if your machine currently has a UK spelling dictionary, choose the item "Classic BNBT UK Manuals". Remember that the manual installation package also updates the Spelling Dictionary, so any UK package will install the UK spelling dictionary, and conversely, any USA package will install the USA spelling dictionary. In the following installation we assume that the machine being upgraded is a Classic US BrailleNote BT. If you intend to install the upgrade using ActiveSync you will also need to download the item labelled "ActiveSync Installer for KeySoft 4.0x". This will download the file "ActiveSync Install_new.exe". Don't use an earlier version of "ActiveSync Install.exe" as changes have been made to facilitate installation of the new User Guide files. 7.2. Installing from Memory Card. Note, people wishing to install the upgrade using the SuperDisk drive should follow the instructions given for installing from a memory card, placing the required files on a super disk rather than on a memory card. 7.2.1. Press Enter to select the "slash" directory. 7.2.7. Press Space until you hear your chosen manual, for example "Classic BNBT USA Manuals", then press Enter. 7.2.8 Press Enter at the prompt for a Command Line. 7.2.9. Follow the prompted installation instructions and at the conclusion press Reset when instructed. 7.2.10. You should now find the file "Classic KeySoft Software 4.01 Readme.txt" in the General folder. If it isn't present, press Reset again, and then try to locate the file again. 7.2.11. If you access the Table of Contents or Index of the electronic User Guide you should now find that the KeySoft version 4 User Guide has been installed. Refer to Section 4.2 for tips on how to check that the manual is in place. 7.3. Installing from ActiveSync. 7.3.1. Copy the file "your Classic manual package.exe", and "ActiveSync Install_new.exe" to a common folder on your PC. 7.3.2. Turn Speech on then Reset with dots 1-2-3 (f-d-s). If you need clarification on the reset procedure, please refer to Section 6.1.2. 7.3.3. Establish an ActiveSync connection between your BrailleNote and your PC. 7.3.4. Using Windows Explorer, open the Folder on your PC in which you copied the 2 files. Select the file "ActiveSync Install.exe", and press Enter on your PC keyboard. 7.3.5. The "PDI KeySoft ActiveSync Installer" dialog box will appear on your PC. It should already be pointing to the classic manual package. If not, press the Down Arrow key until you hear that file name, and press Enter to start the installation. 7.3.6.
