Lisa, I am writing regarding your connectivity issues. First of all, you shouldn't need to use your mom's account at all. You can set up a new dialup and lan connection using an earthlink number that you can be given. You would use the internal modem as you describe. I have the feeling it is in how you have the popserver set, not what you have listed in connectivity. I believe, if memory serves, you would use pop.earthlink.net and the smtp may be smtp.auth.earthlink.net. You don't need to change any of your other information to your mom's setup. If it's a local phone number you're using, write it in upper case. Don't use any dashes. Even if you have to add the area code, don't add dashes. The number sign is provided, so you don't need to add that information. Hope this is not confusing.
