Hi, Mary Ellen. Sometimes, even when you get a critical message, you can
still have the speech going or exercise the braille display for another
hour or more. I do that all of the time as I am worried about actually
reading a book when the display goes dead.
I have set the speech on with that message and it has gone for as much as
an hour and a half before everything goes dead.
I try to get as close as I can to one percent. Sometimes, I am at three
percent.

Why not just use your bn or pk until you get a critical message, check the
options menu under battery power to se at what percent your battery is and
simply go from there.
What I often do if my battery is down to like 2 or 3 % is put a long
document in and let the battery run down by reading me something. Usually
I simply run the battery down from use.
